And Just Like That - "The Best Lasagna in Toronto?"
I’ve always been a bit susceptible to stories about the “best in the city.” It doesn’t matter the topic - you’ve got my interest. You could write a whole story about how recommendations by people can make you want to try something. Social media sites like Facebook and Google tend to dominate in this area. It can also be as simple as a “friend” telling you about a new show on their favorite streaming channel and this may motivate you to watch it. If your friend likes it - won’t you?
Back in December of 2023, BLOG TO posted a story about a new spot that seemed worth a try. Unfortunately it was hard to get into - I mean really hard to get into. Every once in awhile I would look at their website and I’m not sure if I read it correctly but it didn’t look like it accepted reservations for small groups. I put it aside and kind of forgot about until it came up recently in a conversation with some friends. They were trying to make plans to go there with a large group. (Nope - that didn’t happen).
My curiosity led me to took another look at the website and saw that you could make reservations and so I grabbed one for a early sitting on a weeknight.
If you type in an Internet search bar the phrase the best lasagna in Toronto you get a list of places and on this list and taking the number 1 spot is Porzia's
So, as you would surmise the bar is now raised pretty high. I wasn’t completely sure where the restaurant was located? I had been riding my bike to play pickleball this fall and I would often take a detour and ride on Oakwood to look for it and for the life of me, I simply couldn’t find it. Eventually, I did locate it. Its a very, small drive by and miss it type of place.
There are five tables in the back with some seats at the front on a ledge with some more seating around the bar. It is a very pretty place with a wine bar type of chill. It’s actually quite close to where we live and with an early sitting reservation we were off to the races.
We didn’t wait long when we arrived and the service was prompt and friendly. With a limited menu it doesn’t take very long to get the food going.
I would imagine that most people are coming here for one thing and one thing only - the lasagna. Obviously, the lasagna is the star of the show.
They offer it in two ways - a bolognese and the other they call classic style. We began with a caesar salad which was excellent and not long after out came the lasagna. Of course, I had to try the recommended wine on tap.
The lasagna came out on a large plate and it is served as a generous portion. I could have finished it but I decided to only eat half of it and take the rest home for another meal. (And warmed up it was still pretty good.)
So…what’s the big deal about lasagna? Especially from someone who writes a lot about pizza. Well, I’ve always loved it especially because its not easy to make it. You can prepare it but will it be any good?
Was this the best lasagna in TO? I have not tried all of the other places listed in the Blog TO article. The list is long and includes La Palma, Ferro, Lamannas, Mama Martinos, 7 Numbers Eglinton, Buon Giorno, Gusto 501 and Francesca. But, I can say that this is one of the best I’ve ever had and should be reserved for special occasions. It’s not like I should eat lasagna every night.
I finished with the soft serve Tirmasu which was pretty good - not great but pretty good. We were done in less than an hour and back home quickly. I give it 4/5 stars. Maybe in the next few months, I can try a few other places on the best of list.
That’s it for now - short and sweet.
